Newbie Corner: Kavipriya Murthy

Today on ‘Newbie Corner’ we have the cute and bubbly Kavipriya Murthy, a business analyst by profession but a writer and poet by passion.

Welcome to Newbie corner Kavipriya!

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you begin writing?
I am Kavipriya Moorthy, based out of Chennai. Followed the trend and joined Engineering, then an MBA. Joined an IT firm, and was working nine to six. Something sparked out of the blue, scribbled few poems and short stories which are making no sense now, but laid a strong foundation. Some ‘Me’ time during a career break sparked my first novella “I don’t wear Sunscreen.”

What is your favorite genre in writing?

I write micro-mini love stories which helped me gain attention on social media. Hence, I love writing romance. Favorite genre would be thrillers and romance. Though it’s a contradiction, I enjoy reading and writing them.

Who inspires you most and to whom would you dedicate your creative growth?
My friends. Not just those whom I know for years, even acquaintances who encourage and pat my back. I would like to dedicate my creative growth to my father. He is my only source of inspiration and my lifeline.

What kind of a writer are you? Do you plot the entire novel/story or make it up as you write.
I don’t plot the entire novel; I go with the base idea and start weaving. I trust the story and the characters to direct me in the right direction. I sense the growth in me; the first novella had no loose-ends as such. I see a good change in my when it comes to my second, I hope to write it even better than my first, correcting my flaws.

Do you have a favorite place to write or a scheduled time to write every day?
My room, I always spends my free time with my laptop. I don’t have any scheduled time to write, but I write when I feel like it. It works well with me.

Who are your favorite authors and what is the genre that you like reading most?

I am an ardent fan of Nicholas Sparks. After him, I fell in love with Devika Fernando’s way of writing romance. I read Indian author’s books and I feel really glad to see the change in the last few years.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

I would like to see myself as an author of few good books that I can say. I want to expand and wish to reach out to others who are not connected in any way. At least in Chennai, I would like to be known.

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?
I think I can’t write an in and out erotic novel or a ghost story. Even when I tried writing one, it turned out to be an emotional story where the ghost is good at heart. It didn’t terrify any as such. I think these are not my take.

How much important do you think marketing is to the success of a book?
Marketing a book is much important than writing and publishing it. A good book has to reach readers, and marketing is the only way. Though a book costs less than a burger; none opts unless there are positive reviews. To ensure that a book moves out of the family and friends circle, marketing is vital.

What is the message that you want to convey to the readers through your writing?
I write simple and I ensure something positive goes to the reader from the novel. There were noteworthy quotes in “I don’t wear Sunscreen.” In fact the title itself says something positive to woman if you take a closer look.

Thank You Kavipriya. Looking forward to read many more books from you!
All the best!
