Materials Used: Acrylic Paints (Red, Yellow, white and Black) 

Size: 40 cm X 70 cm

Time taken: A full day owing to the bigger canvas size and the multiple coats of paint.

The Portrait of a Special Lady

Sunanda Nair: An Acrylic Portrait

When I started my blog this year I had decided that I will do one on a special lady whom I came to know.

This acrylic portrait that I did in 2012 of  famous dancer Sunanda Nair  holds a special place in my heart.

The portrait though is not so accurate, was what built my confidence as an artist. I had send it to Sunanda Nair, through her Facebook Fan Page just for fun.

I was not so regular on Facebook then and when I logged in next ,I had a surprise waiting .

 I had tears in my eyes when I saw that Sunanda Nair had not only posted the photo of the painting on her personal profile page but had also added me as friend. She had tagged me in it as well.

More than that, her fans were appreciating my painting and praising me !!. There were more than some 200 plus likes and many comments. I was on cloud nine literally.

Before this, the only people who had appreciated my art was my immediate family members and my nearest friends.

This was a huge ego boost to the artist in me and I will remain forever thankful to her. 

The past year and a half, I have come to see the love she showers on her students and friends through her online presence. She is an amazing and beautiful lady. She has won many awards including the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Academy award and has performed all over the world. She has devoted shishyas all over the world  who consider her their godmother.

Stages in an oil Painting

My model landscape...
It has been divided into four grids so that placing the different elements on canvas would be easy

First stage

After drawing the outlines with pencil, I gave the outlines a burnt sienna lining to bring out the picture clearly.

The first coat of the sky has been done.

In the first coat all the basic colours have been put down.

Further detailing

The details were done with finer tipped brushes. Mostly zero and also fan brushes in some areas.

Painters's knife

Beautiful art can be created using a  painter's knife.
The type of painting done is called knife painting.

I do experiment a lot and created this.

Two to Tango (18x12 Inches, Oil on Canvas Board)

It is beautifully textured and is easier to make. Only problem is it takes too much time to dry if you are using oil paints. The one I did is in  oils and  it was done in February. It still is not completely dry yet,though now it  doesn't come onto my hands.

You can opt for acrylics to paint in this way as well.

I have experimented with many mediums for portaiture and tried recently to make one using watercolour.
This is the result.

Though it didn't come quite like how I wanted,still I liked it enough to get it framed  in glass with a plain black border and now adorns my living room wall.

I listened to a song by Frank Sinatra and I could visualize  a girl waiting for her love who had gone sailing. This inspired me to do a painting on the theme.
