Five Womanly Quirks I am thankful for

A quirk is a peculiar aspect of a person's character or behavior. So, what are the womanly quirks that I am thankful for?

Time management:

I am a fanatic when it comes to managing time. I try to squeeze in maximum activities in an hour. While I am writing this post, two sets of cookers are on the stove, one with rice and one with dal. By the time they get cooked, I will finish writing my blog post.  Organizing daily activities give me enough time and energy to accomplish what I set out to achieve. I don’t create a physical list, only a mental one. Even if a few activities do not get completed, most of the important ones do get done. I prioritize them accordingly.

Pulling my hair into a top knot:

My neck needs to breathe is my answer to all those who ask why my hair gets pulled into a tight top bun the moment I return home. I love to go for a bob cut once in a while just to allow my neck to be hassle free.

Nails worry me:

I envy women who sport shapely, manicured nails. I can’t tolerate if my nails grow even a few extra millimeters. I like them clean and buffed, free of any nail polish. Not a feminine attribute surely. I can only dream about getting nail art done. Perhaps a few false nails can help me. Or suddenly one fine morning I will start growing my nails gracefully long by virtue of some miracle. Never mind!

I love experimenting with my hair:

Permanent straightening, curling, ironing, coloring… I have done it all. I love experimenting with my hair. One of my friends used to say that a good hairstyle makes up for 75% of your total look. My hair is always messy, to begin with, and gets messy easily too. So, if I have to attend an important function, I take the help of professionals to fix my hair.

I love folding clothes and making beds:

I become happy when I see a load of clothes to be folded or beds to be made. Both chores are equally therapeutic to me. Even if I am tired like hell, I can easily agree to fold clothes or change a bedsheet. I like seeing the clothes in organized piles. I like the perfection of a bed made neatly.

Phew, the list makes me sound half crazy. I assure you, I am quite sane.
Tell me about some of your quirks.

Five Amazing Women I Know

March 8 is international women’s day. As a woman, I always feel women lack unity. We often hear about ‘bromance’ where men support each other through thick and thin. Unfortunately, when it is between women, often friendships do not have that kind of endurance. It is a very rare gem that we don’t often find. Jealousy, backstabbing, and gossip often ruins great friendships. Many don’t understand that a kind word, an apology at the right moment can make so much of a difference.

For a small village girl like me, the privileges I have acquired, especially in the field of education, life, and career have come through a lot of hard work. Throughout my life, I had strong women I could look up to, whom I considered as my idols. These women not only inspired me but instilled a strong belief that I should always root for the truth.

At every turn in my life, I have also been helped by women. I wrote this post where I mention some of them. Today I wish to talk about another five strong women whom I truly admire and am thankful for.

My mother-in-law:

When I was about to be married, as was inevitable, I received cooking lessons from my mother. But after marriage, I realized they were of no use in my new household. There, the style of cooking and the recipes were entirely different. Even the vegetables and ingredients had strange names. My husband’s house is on the Kerala-Karnataka border and hence their day-to-day language had mostly words from Kannada, a language I barely knew. For example, 'chali' meant mud in my language whereas for them it meant a cold weather. You can imagine my confusion. I had no clue, but my mother-in-law helped me learn everything one step at a time. She also taught me many home-remedies. We lost her in 2015, but her recipes and tips continue to rule in my house.

My husband’s niece:

My husband is the youngest in his family and hence his niece Sapna is one year older than me. When we moved to UAE, I had an easy time adjusting to the new place because she was settled there since years. We would roam around shopping, visiting malls or just eating out. Even after I started working, I would visit her home on weekends to savor her tasty biriyani or her latest cooking experiment. Her daughter was my pet. I am thankful to her for being my best companion during those days in an alien land.

My colleague Ronalyn:

Different nationalities, religion or our hectic job schedules did not come in between our friendship. Rona is from the Philippines and an accountant. She is an expert in Ms excel. She taught me so many excel shortcuts that made my work super easy. We were also foodies. I made her try biriyani and she, in turn, made me addicted to chocolates, especially Hershey's chocolate kisses. Clicking pictures using the camera of site engineers when our construction manager went out was one of our hobbies. Exchanging stories another. She was one hardworking girl who was shouldering the responsibilities of the education of her younger siblings. I was always in awe of her. She taught me a bit of Tagalog and I even learned one of their popular songs. I was her ‘ate’ or big sister. I am thankful, Rona for all the fun times we had.

My counselor and friend Sai Leela Rallapalli

I met Saileela, a manager at IBM at a Reiki class and we became friends there. She, later on, went on to learn Quantum Healing Hypnosis Therapy (QHHT) from Dolores Canon. At that time, I was going through a mild depression after my father passed away and she offered me a chance to experience past life regression. To say the least, the whole experience was magical and life changing for me. It changed my entire outlook towards life and I found a purpose in life. I owe my career as a blogger and writer to that session which put me in touch with my higher self. The session also triggered many story ideas. I have published a few already. Like me, she is a believer in all things esoteric like angels, aliens, reincarnation, and fairies. If you wish to avail her services, contact her at www.saihealing.net. I am thankful Saileela, for being my guide.

My friend Varsha:

Varsha is my junior from school and a working mother with an MBA. But for Varsha, perhaps, I would never have completed my debut novel. She was my first beta reader. After I completed each chapter, I would send it to her for feedback. If I didn’t send at least one chapter a week, she would send me emails urging me to write. With a demanding pre-schooler at home, I would have simply abandoned the manuscript if not for her. For my second novel also, she was my first beta reader. Thank you, Varsha for being a true friend.

The Magic in the Attitude of Gratitude

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

If I could have a superpower, my choice would be the ability to communicate via telepathy. It would be so nice if I could tell everyone around what exactly I wanted to tell them without going through the hassle of a face to face confrontation. Bliss! Words would get converted into frequencies which would be received and deciphered by the gray cells in their brain. They would cringe, laugh or curse according to what message I had sent them. No bodily harm would result as I would be sipping my coffee miles away.

Alas, no human being has developed this highly useful faculty of the brain. One fine day, I hope a Guru would arrive and teach us the ability to communicate via telepathy. Or maybe our friendly humanoid aliens from 'The Awakening' would be kind enough to teach us that. Or a miracle drug would be invented which would enable the human brain to explore all its hidden capabilities. We would then emerge as super humans and we would rule the universe. Yeah, my imagination is running wild after NASA announced the discovery of seven more exoplanets. Till then, unfortunately, we have to use our various means of communication available to say what we wish to say.

Especially when it is gratitude that you feel, express it right away. Not only will it make you feel good, the person at the receiving end also feels happy and content. It will also encourage them to repeat the act of kindness when the 'Thank you' is heartfelt. A simple 'thank you' message can do the trick. You can employ elaborate hashtags, selfies and whatever pictures you wish to accompany it if you are doing it publicly via social media (that is the trend) (*wink, *wink) or through a subdued private message. The more heartfelt it is, the more benefits it brings to the giver and the receiver.

The attitude of gratitude has the ability to cheer up two persons immediately, both the giver and the receiver. Remaining silent when you are feeling grateful is never the right thing to do.
So next time you feel grateful, don't hesitate, thank the person you feel grateful towards. And also when somebody thank you, receive it gracefully. Receiving gratitude is like receiving a bouquet of positivity. Cherish it.

So, who is #1 on your gratitude list this week?

Five vices I Love

I have many vices, but like Yin balances Yang, they keep my life balanced.

My vices are:

1) Laziness:

I am thankful that I become lazy like a cow sometimes. If I were not this lazy, I would have become a workaholic, not taking care of my health or my other needs. Because of this bug, my system gets time to rejuvenate. Work goes for a toss then and long naps, eating out and takeaway dinners rule the roost.

2) Forgetfulness:

I am thankful for this vice as I can let go and release my past easily. Except for a few instances, I have no memory of my past. I take care to store only pleasant memories of people. I modify my memories to make them seem silly and funny. I do forget to collect my handbag from security check-ins most of the times at airports and often get scolded by my husband for that. I once ran all the way from boarding area to the X-ray machine much to the amusement of airport staff at Dubai airport. The guy at the machine had his facepalm moment that day because of me. Yeah, I am the airport clown. That is a virtue, right?

3) Addicted to rice:

Rice is a weakness for me. I can eat rice for breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner. But I am in love with this addiction. East or West, rice is the best.

4) Book hoarder:

I confess that I am a book hoarder. Last time I checked, I had more than 200 unread books.  Still, I continue to buy. I don't get unruly when I see a sale sign at a clothes store but if it is at a bookstore, I enter it without caring about the time, the amount of money I have, often ignoring the protests of anyone who is accompanying me. They can go straight to hell because I have to browse through infinite rows of books, books, and more books, looking for gems of literature.

5) Loose Tongue

When in a crowd, I often become nervous like a mouse, my tongue becomes loose and utter the wrong thing.  Once during a blogger meet, I told a blogger that she didn't resemble her photo at all. I know, wrong thing to say! What I forgot to mention was that I thought she looked better than her photograph. Poor me didn't understand why she ignored me completely after that. But I am thankful as I believe everything happens for a reason.

So that is it. What are the vices that you love?

The Power of Love

Years ago, while I was browsing in the local library for a book to read, a book fell on me. 'You can heal your life' by Louise L Hay. It was just what I needed because then I was dealing with a mild depression caused by the death of my father. The book helped me heal from within. It also drew towards me many other tiny changes. I have felt that because I love books, books always find me at the right time. If a book falls on me while I am browsing in a bookstore, I surely buy it. I have found many gems this way. The latest is ‘Artist’s Way’ by Julia Cameron.

Have you ever noticed how the universe listens when you are filled with love? According to science, love has the highest vibrational energy and is hence the most powerful emotion in the world. When you fill yourself with this energy, synchronicities are bound to occur. You will attract into your love what you truly love.

I have always felt that love is responsible for all the good things that have happened in my life. Now that I look back, I can remember many incidents.
When you sincerely love something, it doesn't take long for that dream to become a reality. Do any activity with love and passion and it would bring in success and happiness.

Love can arrive in many forms.

Love can arrive as a hobby which becomes the love of your life.
Love can arrive as a tiny little bundle of joy who will teach you all about unconditional love.
Love can arrive in the form of a new friend who will become your soul sister/brother and become your one passionate fan and guide.
Love can arrive in the form of a spouse who will become your soul mate and stand by you through all the ups and down in life.
Love can arrive in the form of a job which will bring enormous changes in your life.
Love can arrive in the form of a workout routine or habit that will make you into a fitter and finer version.
Love can arrive in the form of a book which will transform your thought pattern about love and make one realize that love is the most powerful healing energy in the universe.

I have noticed that when love becomes your dominant vibrational energy, people who do not match your vibrational frequency moves away from your life making space for better people to come in. Often these people are those who are acting as your friends but are in truth trying in every way to bring you down.

This is the reason why I am thankful for the presence of love in my life.
Love is a many splendored-thing and it heals us from within. Do you agree with me?

Five Apps I Thank Every Day

In this age, apps have replaced everything. Apps help you with everything starting from paying your bill, hire a trainer, beautician or monitor your health. For writers, there are many apps that help you write better. For the artists, there are apps that can guide you to draw better. For the book lover, reading apps are godsend. Social media apps help the social butterfly connect and glitter.

For me, the app in need is the app indeed. I am listing here five of my favorite apps:

Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

Being a writer and reader, I am always using this app. I hunt for synonyms, antonyms, word origins and update my vocabulary with the word of the day. I don't think a day passes without this app helping me climb over another word hurdle.

Youtube:

This is my favorite go-to app to relax. I watch music videos, cookery videos, inspirational videos, interviews, movies, and TED talks here. I watch channels of celebrity writers, bloggers looking for tips to better my writing skills.

Goodreads:

As a published author, I connect with my readers on Goodreads. Also, I look up books that I wish to read using this app. The reviews are sometimes helpful, sometimes deceiving. But still, I check the reviews before deciding to spend my time and money on any book.

Amazon Kindle:

If you want to write better you have to read better. Nothing better than eBooks which arrive in your phone within seconds once you order them on Amazon. It helps you bookmark, highlight favorite passages, and also helps you post your review on Amazon. I have self-published three books on Amazon Kindle. You can check them out here.

This is one eReader app any book lover should have on their phone. Juggernaut brings books at low cost to the Indian reader with short stories, fiction and non-fiction books added every day into its already rich book collection. You can buy books starting Rs 10. Their collection of free reads contains many classics from English literature like Animal farm, Catcher in the Rye, Pride and Prejudice. I get my daily dose of inspirational reading from here too. I have one of my short stories up there already. Search for 'Persephone' there. Another one will soon be published there.

Uber

Another app which has become a must have one for me is the Uber app. I can travel anywhere without the hassle of running behind autos and haggling with the drivers. The cab comes to me and is very cheap when compared to private taxis. I can monitor the route being taken by the cab, send updates to family and also use my credit card to pay.

10 reasons Why I am Grateful that I Blog

Years ago, I read a blog post by a fellow college mate and thought he was so brave to put his writing up there on his blog for strangers to read. Then I didn’t have the time, courage, or patience to experiment with a blog myself. I was neck deep in work, had daily deadlines to meet, and had no interest whatsoever to spend even a few extra minutes in front of the laptop. Its screen only reminded me of spreadsheets that needed to be filled, emails that waited to be answered or construction drawings that were to be handed out to site engineers.
Then came that much needed sabbatical from work after becoming a mother. Again, I didn’t have time to devote to writing or blogging. My little master was one big troublemaker. I couldn’t afford to even go and pee unless there was someone to keep an eye on him. Forget blogging or even journaling.
Once he started playschool, I began to get restless, now so used to being busy. I experimented with everything from crocheting, painting , portraiture and quilling. Initially, I began a blog to display my crafts and artworks. But when I joined Indiblogger and Blogadda, a new world opened up for me. Blog hopping got me in touch with many blogger-turned writers like Preeti Shenoy, Kiran Manral, and Bhavya Kaushik. It was through Bhavya’s blog that I came upon the writing contest for an anthology, which eventually became my launch pad. The same publisher published my debut novel as well. I realize now that I have many reasons to thank this habit of blogging.

Here are my ten reasons:

1)      Thank you blogging for being my stepping-stone to becoming a published author. 6 Degrees: the game of blogs book by Blogadda and Love Minuets spent many of their formative hours on this blog.

2)      Thank you blogging for giving regular work to my writing muscles. I have not faced writer’s block thanks to you.

3)      Thank you blogging for giving me a platform for my creativity. My art, poems, fiction, and non-fiction writings found a home on this blog.

4)      Thank you blogging for helping me find my tribe. I have met writers whose passion for the written word matches mine thanks to this fine habit called blogging.

5)      Thank you blogging for teaching me some lessons I needed to learn about people in general.

6)      Thank you blogging for helping me see the true faces of people I used to admire. However much you try, words reveal your true personality.

7)      Thank you blogging for helping me to realize that my words were capable of touching hearts. One of my articles ‘Love, Rotis and a pinch of wisdom from a mother’ went viral on Whatsapp and Facebook. It was a letter written by a mother to her son asking him to treat his wife better.

8)      Thank you blogging for giving me a platform to help others through my writing. To appreciate others. To inspire others.

9)      Thank you blogging for giving me many open books to read. There are blogs that I visit when I need a dollop of inspiration. There are blogs, which clear my doubts.

10)   Lastly but not the least, thank you blogging for helping me earn. I earn a decent amount of pin money writing sponsored posts on my blog. I have also won many writing contests that gave me goodies, vouchers, and money.

So what are your 10 reasons to thank blogging?

Three Favourite Blogs

I am a strong believer in synchronicity. Whatever happens to us happens at the right time for the right reason. Every person comes into our lives with a mission.

Even blogs. Every word we read gives a new meaning, a new dimension, which we may not have explored. For that very reason, I like searching for new ideas and tutorials online.

Some blogs inspire me, some guide me, and some help me unlearn accumulated bad habits.

Three blogs, which I am thankful for are:

Louise L Hay Blog:

I consider Louise L Hay as my guardian angel. Whenever I ask I receive messages via newsletters or social media updates tailor suited to my needs.

WritetoDone:

Being a writer, I often turn to this website which has tons of information to help a writer in the various stages of writing and publishing.

If you are looking for tips to plot your novel, short story or that perfect blog post, you don't have to go anywhere else. Check out this website.

2000 free Amigurumi patterns

One of my favorite hobbies is Crocheting. Creating small stuffed dolls using crochet is called Amigurumi. Amigurumi supposedly have a Japanese origin. I love making Amigurumi dolls. You can check out the ones I have created HERE. Crochet is a great stress reliever and you can also create mittens, dresses, shawls, blankets if you learn just a few crochet stitches. For Amigurumi, you need to learn only the single crochet stitch, which is the first one you learn.
Why not try it out?

As bloggers, I believe we have the capacity to influence and help others. Many of us use this amazing platform and bring about change into the lives of their readers. The power of the pen or the written word is mighty. It can leave wounds, which are very difficult to heal. So use it the right way.
On this blessed Thursday, I request all my fellow bloggers to use the power of blogging to spread the message of love and compassion. Love is the most powerful tool in the world. I have never tried to hurt anyone through my blog posts as I believe in Karma. When we hurt others through words, the hurt return to us manifold. It has this boomerang effect.

Happy Thursday, everyone!

The Wonderful Seven in my Life

There are many people in my life I feel grateful for every day. To pick seven from them is tough. But here I go in no particular order:

My mentor Anita Nair:

I was privileged to be part of the 4th season of Anita’s attic, where I had one to one interaction with my favorite writer. But for her, I might have stopped writing entirely. The insights, feedbacks, and the subtle hints that pushed us in the right direction were the main characteristics of Anita’s attic. I met some other wonderful writers, my tribe, there. She also introduced us to many established personalities from the publishing world like writers, editors, agents, and social media experts. What a writer needs most is constructive criticism, someone who can point out their strengths and weaknesses. How wonderful it is to be mentored by someone whose works have been translated into 30 languages already. Thank you, Anita, for entering my life at the right time.

My son and Husband

My son:

They say the best things come in the smallest of packages. Yes, this small packet of love, laughter, and naughtiness makes my life bright and merry every day. It is nice to be scolded at times by a tiny tot for being irresponsible. And best is when they turn into your Guru. He is my Kannada guru. I know I am a very slow learner. But I promise I will be a better student from now on.Thank you, Achu, for being my everything.

My husband Venugopala:

It is fun when the man of the house is one jolly person. He reads my moods, puts up with them, and encourages me to go after my dreams. And most importantly, he supports me when I need it the most. Over the years, he has become my best friend and confidante. There are no secrets between us. And yes, he is my alarm clock and disciplinarian when it comes to my sleeping habits. But for him, I might read throughout the night and sleep through the day. Thank you, Venugopala, for being my best buddy.

My best friend Aathira:

Aathira

Years ago, if someone told me that my best friend would be someone I haven’t even met, I would have called him or her CRAZY. But that is my truth now. I met Aathira via blogging. After we were published in an anthology together, we began chatting occasionally, mostly about writing. We got published together twice again and then we began interacting via Whatsapp. Now there is nothing under the sun that we don’t talk about, though mostly they are centered on books, writers, and writing. She was with me when I was going through a very bad phase in my life early this year. I was down in the dumps. Insecurities and self-doubt plagued me. She sent N number of messages, consoled me and made me laugh with silly jokes. She was the one who told me about Anita’s Attic first, the best step ever for the writer in me. Being an amazing writer, she inspires me. We belong to God's own country. Jokes which only we mallus can understand, calling each other names in Malayalam are our favorite pastimes. Thank you, Aathira for being there always with a bucketful of smilies.

Me with my siblings Dr. Sunil Kannada and Dr. Mini Kannada

My sister Mini:

If there is one no-nonsense person in our family, it is my big sister. She will tell when and where I went wrong and offer the right solution. She is one person I first call for anything. She is my pillar of support. She is my personal doctor and Achu refuses to take any medicine other than what ‘unnuamma’ gives. And yes, he openly admits he loves her more than me. Alas, she is the better cook and mother. The hours spent on the phone with her are some of the best. Thank you, Miniachi for introducing me to many good things like Reiki, for lessons in grooming and discipline. What will I do but for you?

My brother Sunil:

Laughter is what I associate most with my brother. When he is around, laughter is never far. His friends, his anecdotes about college life, movie outings, travels, everything makes us laugh. He is the better writer. He is the better poet, humorist, and everything in between. I really wish he would take up writing seriously one day. With the experiences from his life as a doctor, I am sure he has tons of data already to spin out books after books. Thank you for being a happy presence in my life.

My mother Panchali:

My father and mother
There is no one who can be as wonderful like a mother. She led a very inspiring life being the first woman from our village who ended up working in a white-collar job outside our state. She is a no-nonsense person and scolds us mercilessly if we err. After we lost our father, she is one person who we all cling to. We used to tease her because of her name and ask where her other four husbands were! Panchali, after all, had five husbands. Thank you, Amma, for being who you are.

So tell me about the people in your life you are grateful for.
